Summary Description

The College is seeking an innovative and futuristic leader, who can guide our historical institution through a constantly changing community college educational environment, with a growth mindset to engage current challenges and develop a blueprint for long-term success. The Dean of Liberal Arts serves as a member of the President's Cabinet and has the responsibility to uphold the mission of the College and to work with college constituents to embrace and support the values of this institution with a particular focus on faculty, students, and staff in the Liberal Arts Division. This role is responsible for supervising full-time and part-time faculty in liberal arts courses within transfer programs, as well as those teaching general education courses required for degree programs. The leader of Liberal Arts must be able to foster an environment of collegiality with various partners throughout the College.

The Dean is responsible for promoting academic, administrative, and fiscal leadership at the College and is accountable for upholding the strategic plan. The Dean of Liberal Arts Division has responsibility for: faculty and staff management; labor relations; curriculum development, academic planning; student learning and program outcomes; assessment; program review and evaluation; strategic planning; management of the academic course schedule; and restricted and unrestricted budget management for all academic departments assigned to the division.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and implementation of programs which are consistent with the mission of the college and that meet the evolving needs of the community and its students.
  • Ensure implementation of all provisions of collective bargaining agreements for all faculty and staff in the division.
  • Provide leadership to faculty in the division and guide tenure and post-tenure procedures.
  • Lead the process of program accreditation and preparation of self- study reports and site visits. Ensure programs and curricula align with the requirements of state and federal regulating agencies and external accrediting organizations.
  • Maintain an ongoing divisional educational plan with annual goals and objectives to meet instructional goals.
  • Represent divisional concerns and needs to the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs.
  • Participate in community activities, including advisory boards, to ensure the relevance of curricula.
  • Develop articulation agreements to reduce barriers to student success and degree completion.
  • Collaborates with the Dean of Student Affairs and other Cabinet members to address the mission and values of the institution.
  • Engage in professional development to maintain and develop areas of professional expertise.
  • Demonstrate support for the college staff diversity plan.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:
  • Master's degree in a Liberal Arts discipline
  • Teaching experience in a Liberal Arts discipline
  • At least five (5+) plus years of experience in leadership, planning, management, organizational and supervisory skills.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the College with a strong understanding and respect for the historical legacy to address today's academic goals
  • Ability to think strategically and provide planning goals that meet realistic expectations of the College.
  • Ability to be nimble in developing relevant academic programming and pathways to address the needs of the College's diverse student populations and their communities
  • Ability to market programs and ideas; to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; to establish positive public relations within and outside of the College, and to work collaboratively with various college stakeholders to set and achieve common goals.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and provide leadership in the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion within and outside of the college.
  • Budget management including reconciliation of resources of competing needs.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams and other similar office software tools.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. preferred
  • Understanding of and commitment to the role of the community college in higher education.
  • Experience teaching in a community college setting
  • Knowledge and experience of working at a Predominantly Black Institution (PBI) or a Historical Black College or University (HBCU)
  • Bilingual skills a plus

Additional Information:


This is a full-time, benefitted, Non-Unit Professional Position.

Salary Range: $120,000 - $130,000 actual salary commensurate with academic background and experience.
