Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The University of Maryland School of Public Health (SPH), Department of Global, Environmental, and Occupational Health is seeking a highly motivated and collaborative individual for the position of Lecturer and Advisor (professional-track) in the area of environmental justice. This is a 10-month, academic-year, professional track teaching position with the possibility of renewal and a non-tenure promotion track. This position will include teaching and advising responsibilities for the multidisciplinary undergraduate major in Environmental Science and Policy, with a specialization in Environmental Justice (ENSP-EJ).

Responsibilities:
  • Teach five to six courses per academic year, including two per semester in the areas of environmental justice, the built environment and public health, racism and health disparities, and/or environmental health.
  • Advise ENSP-EJ students on scheduling courses, experiential learning credits, and career planning.
  • Additional responsibilities may include: attending and participating in program planning meetings; participating in program assessment and evaluation; assisting with the revision of syllabi and curriculum revisions; serving on departmental, school and campus committees; engaging in service to the Department of Global, Environmental, and Occupational Health’s undergraduate and/or MPH programs, and the Environmental Science and Policy Undergraduate Program.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Master’s degree in environmental health science, environmental science, environmental or health policy, public health, or related field.

Experience:
At least one year of college-level teaching experience with demonstrated excellence in the classroom.

Knowledge, skills, and experience:
  • Expertise in an environmental health subdiscipline (e.g., environmental justice; risk assessment; water, sanitation and hygiene; climate change and health).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • PhD in environmental health science, environmental science, environmental or health policy, public health, or related field.
  • Commitment to inclusive pedagogies and working with a diverse body of students in a mentoring role.
  • Knowledge of career pathways in environmental justice, and/or experience working on related projects.
  • Experience in and commitment to interdisciplinary environmental science and policy education for undergraduates including an appreciation for the social sciences, natural sciences and humanities.

Salary and appointment date: This will be a 10-month, renewable professional-track position at the rank of Lecturer, with promotion potential to Senior Lecturer over time. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. There may be opportunities to earn summer salary through teaching and/or course development.
