What to Expect
Tesla seeks a Machine Learning Engineer to support ambitious automation goals in Vehicle Engineering. This engineer will be the tip of the spear for our newest manufacturing vision technology in this area of the business, working collaboratively with manufacturing and software engineers throughout North America, Europe, and China. The goal of the New Vision Projects team is to develop novel equipment, such as image processing algorithms and software, to meet the needs of high volume and low human-intervention assembly lines and manufacturing shops. The role will be involved from requirements gathering through validation and verification. If you are interested in having broad autonomy to conduct manufacturing research and development with direct responsibility to the executive team, as well accountability for the systems you design and meet the requirements for the job, apply now.
What You'll Do
  • Lead the machine learning component research and/or development for both green- and brownfield projects and products, with support from software, mechanical, process, and other machine learning engineers
  • Question all assumptions about and requirements for the projects and products you work on based on site visits and stakeholder feedback
  • Experiment rapidly, including deploying your code early and often, targeting continuous delivery of value and gradually solving boundary cases
  • Work with process and systems engineers to document requirements for continued maintenance of the completed system, then hand it off when you cannot personally meet those requirements from a support standpoint
  • Be the technical backstop for practitioners, i.e., engineers and technicians across Tesla that rely on computer vision and machine learning systems, offering them advice on the best way for them to solve their own problems, then offer them feedback throughout their solutions through periodic reviews
What You'll Bring
  • Doctorate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, or equivalent
  • Working knowledge of industrial vision system components, e.g., machine vision, automated inspection, robotics integration, and process control
  • Experience teaching, researching, and developing image processing algorithms and software
  • Ability to relocate to either Fremont CA, San Diego CA, Reno NV, Austin TX, or Berlin DE and to travel as much as 30% of the time to the other sites
