Position Summary:
The Assistant Director, Student Financial Wellness supports programs, events, and resources to advance a university-wide initiative to increase student financial literacy and wellness, including the management of financial wellness platforms and student experience funding. The successful candidate does so in coordination with university committees led by the Director, Professional & Personal Development and in collaboration with university offices such as the Bursar, Financial Assistance, Human Resources, and University Advancement. The Assistant Director works closely with a variety of internal and external constituents, including the handling of sensitive information requiring a high level of discretion. In addition, the Assistant Director supports leadership of the University Career and Professional Development functions with meetings and events. Titles of Positions Supervised: 3-5 undergraduate student employees (“Money Mentors”)

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assists in leading financial wellness efforts through campus-wide strategic planning, resource development and management, and collaboration with appropriate campus services/resources.
  • Supports the design and implementation of financial literacy skill-building workshops to target their specific needs and enhance their confidence about their finances.
  • Provides financial coaching for students, beginning during orientation before arrival on campus, and extending through their time at Villanova, culminating in post-graduation financial wellness strategies.
  • Serves as an intervention service for students struggling with paying their bills or managing their finances while at school, collaborating with appropriate campus offices as a resource.
  • Partner with external partners i.e. American Heritage Credit Union, TIAA, JPMC, Financial Aid, Health Promotion, and relevant student organizations to provide wrap-around financial skill development and coaching.
  • Manage student funding application system used by multiple university offices to ensure equitable distribution of funds as well as compliance with university policy and guidance, collaborating with Advancement, Bursar, and Financial Assistance departments to ensure smooth fund distribution.
  • Support the Director, Professional & Personal Development in the management of the application, decision and communication processes for existing university professional development funding offered to students.
  • Communicate with student applicants for funds and with faculty/staff who manage funds, ensuring proper stewardship of funds and gifts given to the university.
  • Serve on university task forces and committees designed to provide leadership to university offices and employees overseeing student funding.
  • Manage student employees who function as Money Mentors and provide informal coaching to fellow students.
  • Recruit, hire, and train all Money Mentors, working in partnership with Human Resources to follow all necessary policies and university procedures.
  • Meet regularly with mentors and provide ongoing support for their skill development and professional growth.

 

 
  • Perform additional duties and assist with special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Formal Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree required.

 


Minimum Work Experience:
  • Minimum of 3+ years of related experience required.
  • Must have experience teaching, advising or coaching in the personal finance space. A personal finance certification may also be considered towards this requirement.

Work Skills:
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong attention to details. Must be a team player and demonstrate excellent customer service skills.
  • Must have the ability to manage multiple projects/tasks with varied deadlines and anticipate needs.
  • Must be able to work independently, be a critical thinker, and be a strong problem solver.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective and positive working relationships with a variety of constituents (students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni).
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to lead training sessions and workshops designed to meet learning objectives and goals of participants.

Specific Job Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of and experience with financial literacy, financial wellness, and coaching. Expert knowledge of current versions of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Understanding of managing budgets and funding processes.
  • Strong knowledge of technical applications used to manage information and communicate with users, including understanding of ways to report on usage of technology. Knowledge of event management procedures.

  • Work Hours – Occasional evening, night, or weekend work required.

Preferred Formal Education:
  • Master’s degree or personal finance certifications preferred

 

 
Preferred Work Experience:
  • Higher education experience preferred.
  • Experience developing and facilitating sessions or workshops preferred.
