Postdoctoral Scholar - Department of Biochemistry
Postdoctoral Position in RNA systems virology
Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA
Supervisor Name and Title: Dr. Joseph M. Luna
A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Joseph Luna in the Department of Biochemistry and Center for RNA Science and Therapeutics at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine (CWRU). The Luna lab explores questions at the intersection of RNA biology and host-virus interactions using a combination of classic virology approaches and cutting-edge transcriptomic, proteomic and imaging methods. Specific topics of study include post-transcriptional regulation of RNA virus genomes, RNA driven innate immune signaling during virus infection, and dynamic regulation of double stranded RNA sensing during stress.
We are looking for motivated researchers to join our team to make important discoveries while working in a highly collaborative and supportive environment. Applicants that are broadly curious about cellular mechanisms during RNA virus infections are ideal for this position. In addition to carrying out research, substantive support will be available for career development, presenting research findings at national and international conferences, student mentorship, and scientific outreach.
I. SCIENTIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
The candidate will use a combination of virology, cell biology, chemical biology, high-throughput sequencing and imaging approaches to decipher how RNA driven innate immunes responses control select RNA viruses of the hepaci-, flavi-, and corona- virus families.
This candidate will independently plan and conduct experiments to accomplish research objectives and will have an opportunity to develop new and independent research projects that leverage the labs’ expertise in RNA biology, virology, and systems biology.
The candidate will present data at lab meetings, lab journal clubs, departmental seminars and scientific meetings. They will also prepare manuscripts and contribute preliminary data for grant proposals.
II. TECHNICAL SKILLS
Required skills: In-depth experience with standard molecular biology techniques as well as virus and mammalian cell-based assays.
Preferred skills: Experience with next generation sequencing (NGS) data analyses, CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, facility with advanced image analysis workflows (e.g. CellProfiler), and/or computer coding in R/Python.
III. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervise laboratory technicians/assistants and graduate student trainees in experimental design and data analysis of a variety of projects.
IV. EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should have: (1) a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree in biochemistry, cell biology, microbiology, virology, or related field; (2) a strong background in molecular biology, biochemistry or virology; (3) published in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals.
The successful candidate must have strong analytical, oral and written communication skills.
Interested candidates should send a current CV, a 1-page cover letter describing current and future research interests, and names and contact information for 3 references to: Joseph M. Luna, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at email@example.com.
