GW’s Department of Environmental and Occupational Health (EOH) is searching for a full-time Post-Doctoral Scientist for the research group of Associate Professor Dr. Ami Zota. Dr. Zota’s work seeks to secure environmental justice and improve health equity through advancements in science, policy, and clinical practice. Her interdisciplinary research identifies novel pathways linking social disparities, environmental exposures, and reproductive and children’s health. Dr. Zota is equally committed to developing innovative approaches for science communication so that her research can more effectively be used to inform individual and collective decision-making.
This position will support activities on funded research grants aimed at improving understanding of the relationship between federal housing policies and residential environmental exposures among low-income communities. This policy-relevant research project combines expertise in epidemiology, exposure science, and sociology and leverages an innovative data linkage between two large, national datasets – National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) administrative datasets – to examine whether social policies such as federal housing assistance can reduce environmental health disparities. The individual may also be involved in other projects that address environmental health disparities and/or the health of vulnerable populations.
The individual will be involved in all aspects of research including obtaining institutional approvals from federal agencies and institutional review boards, analyzing and interpreting data, and preparing manuscripts and presentations. In conjunction with Dr. Zota, other department investigators, and outside collaborators, the individual will identify research opportunities and prepare proposals for new extramural funding. The individual will also receive mentoring and direct guidance from the Principal Investigator in order to advance their career in academic research, public health practice, and/or public policy. The position offers support for professional development, including travel to professional meetings.
In collaboration with the Principal Investigator and the study team, the candidate will participate in the planning of independent research, will analyze and interpret data, will publish results, and will represent the university at conferences and meetings. This position may also help the Principal Investigator to lead and direct the work of lower level research staff and graduate public health students. This role performs work under the supervision of experienced researchers.
This position is for a 1 year duration beginning Spring of 2022. The position may be renewed for a 2nd year depending on satisfactory performance and funding availability.

– Interface and communicate with federal agencies to gain access to data from HUD administrative records, American Housing Survey, NHANES, and Census.
– Conceptualize epidemiological study designs and conduct analyses of multi-year NHANES, HUD, and Census linked data using statistical software such as SAS, STATA, or R
– Effectively manage large, complex population datasets and their quality control
– Develop communications materials and organize team meetings to disseminate public health information to end users.
– Plan and conduct independent research; write and publish peer-reviewed manuscripts
– Prepare and submit grant proposals
– Provide support with data management and guidance to junior staff

Qualified candidates will hold a Doctoral degree in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.
|Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:|
- Doctorate degree in environmental health, epidemiology, exposure science, sociology, biostatistics, or related field.
- Advanced skills in computer programming and data management: Versed in programming languages such as R, SAS, and Stata.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills (e.g. evidenced by journal articles, websites, op-eds and other writing for general public)
- High attention to detail and level of organization, ability to work on multiple projects
- Enthusiasm for conducting applied research at the nexus of environmental health, health disparities, and policy
- Experience working with interdisciplinary teams on research projects
- Experience working with NHANES data, census-tract level data, and other large, complicated datasets
- Grant proposal writing and submission experience
- Experience mentoring junior staff
- Ability to work and learn independently, including remote work as needed
