The Department of Forest Ecosystems & Society (FES), located in the College of Forestry, invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor with a focus on the economics and policy dimensions of forest-based climate solutions.
As the world confronts unprecedented rates of change, development of sound policies will require knowledge and understanding of the conditions for thriving social and ecological systems.
Forest Ecosystems & Society is a highly diverse department where scholars and educators from across social and biophysical disciplines address issues of conservation and sustainability. The new colleague will augment our efforts to better understand and utilize the potential of forest ecosystems in responding to climate change. Our department aspires to create an environment in which all members of the community feel safe, respected and free to participate in the undertakings of the College. We embrace equity, inclusion and diversity as foundational values of OSU and as pillars of excellence, enhancing all of the College’s missions.
As communities, organizations, and governments turn to nature-based solutions to climate mitigation and adaptation planning, there is a need to produce robust economic and policy analyses of potential forest-based strategies and barriers to their implementation. We welcome applicants with a wide range of research interests within the broad area of policy options and economic analysis for resilient forested ecosystems and communities in the face of global change.
This position contributes to a research focus within FES on climate change, complementing another open position in forest carbon cycle science, and bringing a renewed focus on ecosystem services, policy, and economics.
The faculty member hired in this position will be expected to teach in our on-line graduate certificate programs in Sustainable Natural Resources and Forests and Climate Change, as well as our multidisciplinary undergraduate Bachelor of Science program in Natural Resources. They will also mentor graduate students/postdocs.
The faculty member in this position will have opportunities for interdisciplinary research and collaboration with faculty across OSU, including within the College of Forestry, the College of Earth, Oceanic, and Atmospheric Sciences, the College of Agricultural Sciences, and the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute. There are also many opportunities for partnerships with federal governmental research entities such as the US Forest Service and USGS, engagement with the long-term ecological research at the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest, and use of our College’s Research Forests for teaching and research. This is one of two open College of Forestry positions in the area of economics; applicants are welcome to apply for one or both of the positions.
