What You Will Do
We seek a motivated candidate for a postdoctoral research position in applied magnetic resonance with a focus on electrical engineering. You will work in a program that supports fundamental, interdisciplinary research to advance detection capabilities for chemical agents. Specifically, you will work with an interdisciplinary team that is developing and building a new capability for non-invasive detection of synthetic opioids (such as fentanyl) using nuclear quadrupole resonance spectroscopy.
In the twelve-month period between August 2019 and August 2020, 52,000 Americans died from synthetic opioid overdoses. Synthetic opioids, including fentanyl (and nearly 90 derivatives - collectively known as fentanyls), cross our border daily at locations such as the JFK airport. Compounding the drug interdiction problem, fentanyl is incredibly toxic in doses above therapeutic levels. Our team is developing a program for synthetic opioid detection to develop technologies to safely and rapidly screen packages specifically for the unique chemical signatures of fentanyls.
The research focus of the package screener includes developing magnetic resonance detectors with reduced deadtimes and developing novel polarization transfer systems, via the application of dynamic magnetic fields, to improve the detection of these materials.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated experience in RF circuit construction, design, and operation.
Excellent written and oral communication skills evidenced by a strong publication and presentation record.
Ability to obtain a Q-clearance. Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. A Q clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances.
Education/Experience: PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or related field completed within the past five years, or will have completed all PhD requirements by commencement of appointment.
Experience in PCB design and fabrication
Experience with signal processing techniques and analysis of temporal and spectral data.
Experience running custom magnetic resonance equipment
Computational simulations of electromagnetic fields
Background knowledge in chemistry and in measurement techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance or nuclear quadrupole resonance spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography.
Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos.
