POSITION TITLE: Safety Technician (R&H Waste)

Join our dynamic team at Scripps Research as a Safety Technician (R&H Waste) where you'll play a pivotal role in managing hazardous waste in compliance with safety regulations. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to our commitment to environmental health and safety, showcasing your technical expertise and attention to detail. As part of our dedicated team, you'll ensure the safe handling and disposal of waste materials, supporting our mission of excellence in biomedical research.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Safely remove and transport chemical, biological, and radioactive waste from campus locations, process waste by hazard class, package for off-site disposal, and manage the accumulation and disposal of Universal waste.
  • Process incoming packages of radioactive materials and manage in-house ethanol shipments, including associated paperwork and invoices.
  • Perform radioactive contamination surveys by selecting surfaces for testing, conducting wipe tests, analyzing results, and processing and consolidating Decay In Storage (DIS) radioactive waste.
  • Coordinates and performs laboratory decommissioning and decontamination.
  • Conduct monthly Spill Prevention Control Countermeasure (SPCC) inspections, record results and perform monthly AED inspections.

REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • 2 years of environmental health and safety experience performing similar or related work preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must possess a valid California driver's license.
  • Forklift experience preferred.
  • This position works in areas such as research laboratories, maintenance areas and vivariums. With or without reasonable accommodation, employees in this position must be able to lift 60 pounds. Further details of the physical requirements of established essential functions will be discussed during the interview process.
  • This is an on-campus position requiring 5 days per week working onsite from our La Jolla campus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

May include: heavy lifting, moving drums, pushing carts, traversing campus/facility as needed, operating machinery (such as motorized pallet jack, golf cart, forklift, computer, phone), exposure to outdoors.

COMPENSATION

The expected hiring range for this position is $22.00 to $28.00/hourly, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
