At Varian, a Siemens Healthineers Company, we bring together the world's best talent to realize our vision of a world without fear of cancer. Together, we work passionately to develop and deliver easy-to-use, efficient oncology solutions.

We are part of an incredible community of scientists, clinicians, developers, researchers, professionals, and skilled specialists pushing the boundaries of what's possible, to improve people's lives around the world. We embrace a culture of inclusivity in which the power and potential of every individual can be unleashed. We spark ideas that lead to positive impact and continued success.

If you want to be part of this important mission, we want to hear from you.

We are looking for a versatile and well-rounded mechanical engineer with a solid background in heat transfer and mechanical design principles to join our linear accelerator systems group. This position is within the hardware group for the radiation producing subsystem on Varian Radiation Therapy machines. As such, the candidate will become part of a small interdisciplinary team that also includes electrical engineers and physicists. The ability to collaborate effectively in a multi-disciplinary and cross-functional team is essential, as are the ability to efficiently manage project timelines and supplier collaborations in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities will include

  • Research and understand thermomechanical fatigue and metallurgical processes inside x-ray targets.
  • Solve a variety of design challenges on linear accelerator systems, such as precision alignment problems, thermal analyses and material science questions.
  • Perform thermal, structural and fluid flow simulations
  • Employ Design for X methodology, including manufacturability, reliability and cost
  • Perform root cause analyses to understand failure mechanisms
  • Design, execute and interpret experiments
  • Work with other scientists, engineers and suppliers to review and solve difficult technical issues.
  • Provide support and expertise to Manufacturing and Field Service groups
  • Provide scope, cost and schedule estimates for research and engineering projects. Coordinate resources needed to complete a task or project.
  • Improve documentation, baseline data and processes.

Job Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Material Science (MS/PhD preferred)
  • Strong background in Heat Transfer, Material Science (especially metallurgy), Solid Mechanics and Fluid Dynamics; experience in brazing/metal-bonding techniques is a big plus
  • Experience running simulations (heat transfer, CFD, FEA, ...)
  • Hands-on aptitude and lab experience
  • Mechanical design experience (incl. familiarity with CAD software)
  • Highly motivated and ability to work independently
  • Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to interact effectively with experts in multiple disciplines
