General Responsibilities
The Director provides leadership and strategic direction for comprehensive career and employment services. The Director will aid in advising prospective students in determining how to match career goals to an academic pathway: students who have not yet declared a program of study, pursuing employment to fund their education, seeking internships, exploring career employment, students looking to learn more about careers and/or themselves, and alumni desiring support in career changes or professional development. The Director collaborates with the Teaching and Learning division and Continuing Education/Workforce Development division on apprenticeship programs, internship openings, placement, data collection, and outcomes evaluation. The Director will assist the Associate Vice President with administration of the Perkins Federal Grant funds to improve postsecondary-level career and technical education programs while closing the achievement gap for special populations. This position maintains high visibility within the business community and works closely with senior leadership in following up leads with potential employers.

Work Performed
  • Develops new contacts with external organizations for the purpose of expanding employment and internship opportunities for students and alumni. Develop and implement effective assessment and program evaluation methods.
  • Manages and develops annual department budgets and is responsible for administering grant funds.
  • Collaborates with business, industry, and governmental agencies to promote and sustain partnerships and job sites for students, community residents, and internship students.
  • Provides guidance and leadership to staff, including training, staff evaluation, professional development, and related personnel matters.
  • Assists with administration of the Perkins Federal Grant funds to improve postsecondary-level career and technical education programs while closing the achievement gap for special populations on the Perkins core indicators of performance.
  • Coordinates communication with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the career services department is meeting the needs of the departments and employers.
  • Monitors, tracks, compiles, and analyzes data for reports regarding student success rates in career and job outcomes.
  • Oversees and manages the content of the Career Services webpages.
  • Selects, maintains, markets, and trains on career/employment technology, including daily operation of multiple online job/internship platforms, which manage employer contacts, job/internship positions, and student registrations for internships and employment opportunities.
  • Develop and implement marketing strategies to recruit and promote awareness of internship programs, employment events and programs.
  • Directs the collection, maintenance, and reporting of employment and internship data.
  • Plans and coordinates job/internship fairs and supervises employer recruitment visits for on-campus recruiting.
  • Assigns departmental liaisons among the three academic divisions and leads proactive partnerships and outreach efforts.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
  • Master’s degree in career counseling, psychology, student services, or related area is requiredPh.D. preferred.
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible career and employment counseling experience required, with preferred experience within a college setting.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience managing a team charged with the responsibility of advising students on achieving career focused results.
  • Knowledge of current employment trends in the local, state, regional and Federal labor markets.
  • Dedication to the National Association of Colleges and Employer’s principles and practices of career planning, employment, and recruitment.
  • Knowledge of career assessments (e.g., Strong Interest Inventory, Myers-Briggs) and career exploration (e.g., FOCUS-2) software packages.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to work one on one with clients and employers, and to conduct small and large group workshops or presentations.
  • Experience supervising career counselors/employment specialists preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal, research, and analytical skills.
  • Values diversity and takes pride in promoting students’ strengths, views, and experiences.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail and deadlines; strong organizational skills for prioritizing projects.

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Windows 7, PowerPoint, Internet, and Email.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Regular attendance is a requirement of this job.
  • May need to work evening and weekend hours as needed and for special events.
  • Occasional weekend programs required.
  • Performs all duties while considering the impact of any actions on the college’s sustainability initiatives in the areas of environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and economic prosperity.

Supervises the Assistant Director of Career Education, Career Specialist(s), and Career Education Counselor(s).

As a participating member of the Maryland Retirement and Pension System, HCC offers two retirement options: The Pension, which requires a 7% employee contribution and The ORP, a 403(b) with a 7.25% employer contribution only. Employees in positions that do not require a bachelor’s degree must participate in The Pension. Employees that possess a bachelor’s degree and hold professional positions that require a bachelor’s degree may choose to participate in either The Pension or The ORP.
