* Assistant Teaching Professor, also termed Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment (LPSOE and equivalent to tenure-track)

We are interested in exceptional candidates with expertise and teaching experience in any of the core areas of oceanic, Earth, atmospheric, climate, and environmental sciences. The SIO department has undergraduate majors in Marine Biology, Geosciences and Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences. The interdisciplinary ESYS program has specialized tracks in Earth Sciences; Ecology, Behavior and Evolution; Environmental Chemistry, and Environmental Policy. It prepares undergraduate majors to enter a broad range of environmental careers in the natural sciences, social sciences, public policy, law, and business.

Teaching professors are full-time faculty who are expected to teach 8 units (two courses) per 10-week term for a total of 24 units (six 4-unit courses) over the academic year. In addition to demonstrating excellence in teaching, individuals in this position are expected to engage in professional activities and services related to the pedagogical mission of the SIO Department, the ESYS Program, and the University. We are especially interested in candidates who have created or contributed to programs that aim to increase access and success of underrepresented students in the environmental science and management fields and/or have detailed plans to accomplish such goals.

In addition to excelling as instructors, teaching faculty are expected to be innovators in instructional development, curriculum design, course structure, teaching methods, new technologies, and coordinating a spectrum of teaching activities. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to teach core and advanced lecture and/or laboratory courses in the ESYS Program and in the SIO Department. Of particular interest is the ability to contribute to the course sequence ESYS 187A,B,C which requires mentorship of a diverse range of students completing the ESYS Senior Internship Project.

SIO is a world-renowned center of oceanographic, atmospheric, biological, and solid earth research with approximately 200 principal investigators leading research programs. We are committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. The SIO Department and the ESYS Program are interested in candidates who can demonstrate a commitment to inclusive excellence and service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. We welcome candidates who have had non-traditional career paths or who have taken time off for family reasons (e.g., caring for children, the disabled, or the elderly). Information about Scripps' ongoing diversity efforts may be found here: https://scripps.ucsd.edu/diversity.

Applications will be evaluated on the stated vision and plans for
(i) Teaching of truly exceptional quality that meets our long-term instructional needs
(ii) Professional achievement and activity; an appointee is expected to maintain currency in the profession and pedagogy
(iii) University and public service; with substantial contributions to instruction-related, extra-curricular, and outreach activities
