Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Record of scientific excellence and achievement as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and/or contributing to proposals.

  • Demonstrated experience contributing to software development using languages such as C/C++, Fortran, and Python.

  • Demonstrated experience working on multi-personnel projects as well as on multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional teams.

  • Proven success of delivering final work products to supervisors and/or sponsors.

  • Expertise in any of the following: data integration, parameter estimation, uncertainty quantification, statistics, machine learning, high-performance computing, or data visualization.

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which usually requires U.S. citizenship.

Additional Minimum Job Requirements for (Scientist 3):

  • Experience leading multi-personnel, multi-disciplinary, and/or multi-institutional teams.

  • Experience mentoring and working collaboratively with students, postdocs, and/or similar junior staff.

  • Thorough knowledge and experience in developing and implementing technical research and development projects, including the formulation and testing of hypotheses, investigation of alternative solutions, and recommendation of solutions to technical problems.

Educational Requirements:

Scientist 2: A Ph.D. in a field related to the Geophysics Group’s infrasound challenges (e.g., physics, acoustics, geophysics, seismology, applied mathematics, or computer science) and completion of a postdoctoral fellowship. In rare cases, work experience instead of the postdoctoral fellowship will be considered.

Scientist 3: A Ph.D. in afield related to the Geophysics Group’s infrasound challenges (e.g., physics, acoustics, geophysics, seismology, applied mathematics, or computer science) and completion of a postdoctoral fellowship. In rare cases, work experience instead of the postdoctoral fellowship will be considered and a minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience.

Where You Will Work

The Earth and Environmental Sciences Division is a multi-program research organization with core capabilities in geology, geochemistry, geophysics, geomaterials, geography, hydrology, petroleum engineering, chemical engineering, acoustics, atmospheric science, ecology, environmental science, computational science, and geotechnical engineering. Cross-cutting capabilities and facilities span the needs for laboratory experimentation, field deployments, computing, and data analytics. Capabilities in the Division are organized into groups, which consist of scientists, postdoctoral researchers, technicians, administrators, and students. Most programs within the Division feature multi-discipline teams organized to solve complex problems of national importance.

The LANL Seismoacoustics Team, which is a member of the lab’s Geophysics Group (EES-17), is dedicated to being an international leader in seismic and acoustic research for global and national security. This includes research and development supporting multiple aspects of explosion monitoring for nuclear non-proliferation as well as various scientific and civil applications. The Team approaches these research problems using combined physical and numerical analyses, multiple computational techniques, machine learning, high performance computing, data analytics, multi-physics datasets, and physics-based modeling of the relevant sources and propagation effects. The Seismoacoustics Team is currently looking for creative and innovative candidates who will conduct excellent scientific research, publish their findings, build relationships with colleagues, and impact our technical mission and products.
