What You Will Do

The Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) in the Materials Physics and Applications Division (MPA-CINT) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking outstanding candidates for the position of Deputy Group Leader (DGL). The DGL will assist the Group Leader in providing technical leadership and management for MPA-CINT. The DGL will also be responsible for certain areas of program management and user community outreach. MPA-CINT currently has 85 employees including 65 technical and postdoctoral staff members and a budget of around $30M/yr.

The Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies is a national user facility funded by the DOE Office of Science to provide research capabilities in nanoscience to a worldwide community of users. The MPA-CINT group stewards the CINT Gateway facility at LANL, which together with the Core facility at Sandia National Laboratory form the entire CINT user facility. Scientific thrusts in CINT include: Nanophotonics and Optical Nanomaterials; Quantum Materials Systems; Soft, Biological and Composite Nanomaterials; and In-Situ Characterization and Nanomechanics. MPA-CINT is also comprised of the Laboratory for Ultrafast Materials and Optical Spectroscopy (LUMOS), as well as a wide range of other research funded by LDRD, DOE Office of Science and other program sponsors. LUMOS capabilities can be found at https://cint.lanl.gov/facilities/LUMOS/index.php .

The Deputy Group leader's duties (shared with the Group Leader) will be distributed among the following activities:

  • Group Management:

  • Ensuring the overall quality and effectiveness of the Center in research and development and dedication to our mission as an Office of Science national user facility.

  • Ensuring a safe, secure, and compliant workplace for group employees and users, and ensuring adherence to Laboratory policy within the Center.

  • Aggressive pursuit of Laboratory and Division ES&H, Integrated Safety Management, and AA/EEO/Diversity objectives.

  • Promoting effective partnering and performance within the Center leadership team and support staff to maximize overall productivity.

  • Oversight of all aspects of group financial and human resource management.

  • Strategic and tactical planning in conjunction with the Division Leader and the division leadership council that leverages the technical strengths and capabilities in the Center for the overall success of the division and directorate.

  • Supporting the Group Leader in maintaining and evolving a sound technical vision that leverages the balance of existing programs.

  • Support the development of new programs, with an emphasis on additional funding, based on innovative combinations of the group's and Center's thrusts and core competencies in response to the laboratory's and national needs.

  • CINT Program Management and User Community Outreach

  • Preparing monthly reports for the Office of Basic Energy Sciences, the CINT program sponsor

  • Publication tracking using citation indexing databases

  • Managing scientific content on the CINT program website to communicate scientific capabilities and access modes to users

  • Analyzing publication metrics and national award outcomes to strategically target potential CINT users

  • Tracking outreach metrics and developing appropriate baselines for comparison; Promoting CINT and the NSRCs at national meeting exhibitions

  • Co-organizing annual technical conferences, including procuring sponsorship, managing conference materials, and budget management

  • Overseeing online content for program sponsors and user community; including, science highlights.

  • Building and nurturing a strategic partnership between the two host laboratory partners (LANL and SNL)

Support for this position is at 1 FTE with effort roughly split between group management and program management/outreach.

  • Strong recordoftechnicalaccomplishmentsanddemonstrated professional experiencein one or more of the MPA-CINT's thrust areas asdemonstratedby a strongrecordof publication in prestigious journals andinvitedpresentations atinternational conferences.

  • Demonstrated commitmentto a safe and environmentally sound workplaceandto the utilization of a diverse workforce is also required.

  • Recordofeffectiveteamwork andconsensusbuilding

  • Demonstrated excellent oraland written communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Recordofsuccessfulmentorshipand technical development of personnel.

  • Demonstratedknowledge andunderstandingoftheentrepreneurialskills necessary to grow andcultivateascience-basedprogramportfolio.

  • Abilityto obtain aDOEQ Clearance

  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.

  • Ability to interact effectively with all levels of personnel: scientists, administrative staff, management

  • The ability to promote scientific capabilities and opportunities to prospective users

  • The ability to communicate scientific achievements to program sponsors

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experiencemanaging experimentalfacilities and supportpersonnel.

  • Demonstratedleadershipexperiencerequiredto coordinate andpromote teaming across organizational boundaries.

  • A record ofsuccess indevelopingnew programfundinginitiatives and anetwork of contacts with program sponsors.

  • Familiarity with the areas ofresearch activityin MPA-CINT.

  • Familiarity and experience with core LANL mission activities

  • Goodworkingknowledgeof laboratoryfinancial,management, and ES&Hpractices.

  • Demonstratedexperience indeveloping and operatinglarge userfacilities.

  • Experience workingon DOE-BESresearch andwithBES Program Managers

Education: Minimum requirement is a bachelor’s degree in science or engineering.APh.D.degreeinafield relatedto MPA-CINT's core scienceareas(materials science, chemistry,physics, biology, electrical ormechanicalengineering) is strongly preferred

Additional Details

Directive 206.2-Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served at least one year of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
