The College and the District
Skyline College is part of the San Mateo County Community College District and is designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), enrolling approximately 16,000 students each academic year. The College seeks a full-time, tenure track faculty member in Automotive Technology. The ideal candidate will share the College’s commitment to educating all students equitably, including racially and socioeconomically diverse student populations.

Duties and Responsibilities
The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position. 1. Teach courses in the area of steering, suspension, alignment, and braking systems in accordance with established course outlines
2. Curriculum development, assessment, and revisions, including student learning outcomes, student assessment, and program development, including assessment and quality assurance
3. Work with other automotive faculty to maintain program standards to ensure continued ASE Educational Foundation certification
4. Work in cooperation with industry sponsors and advisory committees to ensure currency of curriculum and training
5. Remain abreast of recent technological developments in education and the automotive industry by completing a minimum of 20 hours annually of automotive related approved training
6. Participate in all aspects related to the operation and supervision of the automotive classrooms and laboratory areas
7. Post and maintain regular office hours in accordance with policy
8. Participate as a member of division and college committees
• Possession of any Bachelor’s degree plus two years of automotive technician repair work experience OR any Associate degree plus six years of automotive technician repair work experience OR the equivalent (see below)
• A minimum of an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) A4 and A5 Automotive Certification and capable of certifying in G1 by Spring 2021
• Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity minded-practice both within and outside of the classroom
This classification requires visual comparison and acuity; manual dexterity; heavy lifting up to 50lbs; bending, stooping, pulling, pushing, reaching overhead, moving objects of moderate weight, kneeling; exposure to chemicals, dust, odors and fumes; and ability to actively listen in order to perform the essential functions.

Academic Background Equivalence
Related to disciplines in which a Master’s Degree is not generally expected or available. The applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units of coursework in the academic field and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:
i) a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree, and
ii) a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by course work required for the degree major.
Professional Achievement Equivalence
The applicant must have completed the General Education requirements for that degree and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that his/her preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Automotive trade and teaching experience in a credentialed automotive technology program
2. Experience working with service managers of new car dealerships and owners/managers of independent repair facilities
3. A commitment to maintaining currency in the discipline through participation in research and creative activities, professional associations, and services related to the automotive industry
4. Skill and experience in motivating students from a broad spectrum of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds
5. The ability to work with students who have a wide range of skills, varying abilities, motivations, and academic or career goals
6. Knowledge and experience in the use of successful teaching techniques (e.g. PowerPoint, multimedia, You Tube, animations, internet, research, video camera usage, learning management systems (LMS), etc. that engage students in their own learning experience and promote the development of critical thinking skills
7. Evidence of the ability to administer various components of a college automotive program, including recruiting, teaching, and support for student and division programs
8. The ability and desire to work collaboratively with faculty and staff to enhance instruction, curriculum, and student success
9. Commitment to professional responsibilities outside of the classroom through enthusiastic contributions to department, division, and college activities
10. A minimum of 96 classroom contact hours teaching automotive technology related course(s)
• Recent teaching and work experience in steering, suspension, alignment and braking systems
• Recent secondary or post-secondary experience working with racially minoritized and other disproportionately-impacted students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and particular fields shape patterns of participation and outcomes
• Willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and address inequity in the classroom and on campus
• Knowledge and experience of emerging automotive technologies
• Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within automotive technology courses and classrooms
• Demonstrated knowledge of recent experience working with similar student populations as those represented at Skyline College, including impacts on institutional, departmental, and instructional practices

Foreign Education completed outside of the United States must be deemed equivalent to that gained in conventional/accredited U.S. education programs in order for it to be considered for the satisfaction of minimum qualifications.
