Organization Overview

Hearing Health Foundation (HHF) is the largest private foundation in the USA focused on preventing and finding cures for hearing loss and related conditions. Based in New York City, HHF has aggressively partnered with top researchers at leading academic medical centers to advance the quest to find cures for these diseases and conditions.

Since 1958, the vision of HHF has been to provide critically needed funds to researchers to conduct groundbreaking research and education. HHF has played a key role in all significant advancements in hearing loss research in the last 50+ years.

HHF’s signature programs are the Hearing Restoration Project (HRP), a consortium of scientists focusing on finding a cure through hair cell regeneration, and the Emerging Research Grants (ERG), a program providing investment capital to new researchers within 7 years of receiving their PhD and prior to getting NIH funding. Within ERG, several programs are also funded for researchers at all levels including Central Auditory Processing Disorder, Meniere’s disease, Usher syndrome, and tinnitus.

In FY2019, HHF funded 23 scientists with a total funding of $1.65m. HHF’s budget is approximately $3m and has $8m+ in endowment and strategic reserves.

One of HHF’s overarching principles is transparency: HHF is rated 4-stars by Charity Navigator, America’s most-utilized independent evaluator of charities, accredited by Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance (BBB), received an A+ rating from CharityWatch, and holds the highest Platinum Level status from GuideStar. HHF has been recognized annually since 2016 as one of the “Best Charities for Your Donations” by Consumer Reports.

Job Overview

Partnering with CEO Timothy Higdon, the successful candidate has a unique opportunity to build and steward a robust portfolio of individuals and foundations. Over the last 5 years, significant progress has been made in growing fundraising successes including increasing endowment, building new major gift relationships and significantly increasing foundation giving.

This is clearly a fundraising portfolio position where the incumbent will be measured on funds raised, new relationships established, existing relationships expanded and activity (meetings and calls). The incumbent will become an integral part of the development team led by the CEO.  HHF has moved away from fundraising events, such as galas. However, cultivation and investor events, as well as stewardship events, are part of our overall strategy.
