We are seeking a post-doctoral researcher to help us design and develop innovative materials (e.g. shape memory alloys, metal matrix composites, refractory materials), advanced coatings (ceramic and refractory), and novel structures (e.g. lattices and topology optimized structures) that exploit the flexibility of additive manufacturing and plasma spray processes. You will apply your strong background of alloy design, mechanical design, and solidification theory to generate solutions for the government's challenge problems. With expertise in structure-property-processing relationships and materials manufacturing, you will develop unique, multi-functional structures that exhibit dramatic increases in performance metrics. You will have the opportunity to propose your own research concepts and drive the strategy for the future.

As a post-doctoral researcher...

•Your primary responsibility will be to design novel alloy compositions and structures that exploit the processing pathway of rapid thermal gradients during additive manufacturing, plasma spray, and other novel manufacturing techniques.
•You will assist in heat transfer modeling to predict the thermal history and microstructural evolution during processing.
•You will perform detailed data analyses to verify synthesis and explain characterization results.
•You will detail and present technical work internally and externally.
•You will communicate daily with project teams and leadership on computational materials science work to support programmatic needs; participate in discussion of ideas, options, and approaches; and report work progress in both oral and written form.

 

Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
 
•Possess a PhD in Materials Science & Engineering, Materials Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
•Have demonstrated experience in materials processing such as metal alloy solidification.
•Have demonstrated experience in materials-related design with proficiency in Solid Works, CATIA, CREO, other related CAD platforms.
•Have the ability to self-direct new research paths based on results and propose new ideas.
•Are willing and able to perform work in a laboratory setting and travel for field testing, sponsor visits, conference attendance, and presentations.
•Are able to obtain a Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
 
You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

•Have experience with alloy design and manufacturing.
•Have experience with additive manufacturing of metals.
•Are familiar with design of experiments (DOE) or similar practices for optimization as well as lab data acquisition and analysis tools, including LabView, MatLab, and JMP.
