We are seeking a versatile scientist to join the Chemical Biology group in the Boston Research organization. We are looking for a passionate professional to help drive our efforts to discover transformative new therapies for patients in need. The scientist in this role will work at the intersection of chemistry, biology, and genetics to plan and execute experiments designed to identify novel mechanisms of modulating the function of targets that extends beyond traditional orthosteric binding site inhibition. In this position, one will work closely with chemists and biologists to identify and validate novel mechanisms of modulating target levels, expression, and/or localization for the treatment of serious genetic diseases. To be successful in this role, the incumbent scientist must be able to independently develop unconventional solutions to difficult problems, thrive in situations with a high degree of uncertainty, and self-manage the tension between urgency and scientific rigor.
The ideal candidate will have significant exposure to a variety of techniques that permeate the field of chemical biology, including: phenotypic-based screening, cell-based and biochemical assay development, synthetic chemistry, proteomics, and CRISPR-based gene editing. It is expected that a candidate will have deep, first-hand knowledge of at least one specific area of the above and more than just a passing familiarity with other areas. Strong collaboration and communication skills are a given; grit and a true passion for discovery-based science will be essential.

  • Perform essential role in evaluating potential new drug targets, assay technologies, and strategic opportunities.

  • Identifying appropriate screening technologies for new targets and guide assay development.

  • Facilitate in screening hit triage and hit to lead progression in multiple projects

  • Data analysis, interpretation, and visualization of data.

  • Presentation of hypotheses and data to project teams and senior management.

Qualification:

  • PhD (or equivalent) in and significant hands-on experience with complex chemical biology projects.

  • Proven ability to work with diverse scientific methods and collaborate across disciplines.

  • 2+ years' related experience

  • Strong data analysis skills.

  • A personal commitment to increasing diversity and inclusion at Vertex and throughout science.
