The Dean of BCAS is the chief academic, fiscal, and administrative officer of the College, reporting to the Executive Vice President and Provost. The Dean has responsibility for BCAS’s instructional, research and outreach environment, including oversight of its $46.6 million budget, faculty recruitment and retention, advancement and external relations, and student academic affairs. The Dean is expected to provide vocal and visionary leadership on behalf of the College, to embrace the mission of public education in an urban environment, and to help create and implement a framework for excellence within the College that incorporates diversity at its core. This deanship is an exciting opportunity for an entrepreneurial and dynamic leader, as BCAS seeks to grow enrollment at the same time that it undertakes efforts to improve coordination across colleges and to develop innovative curricular pathways for students with shifting career needs and goals.
Candidates much possess a doctorate in a discipline relevant to the position, currently hold the rank of tenured Professor, and have a record of scholarly achievement and academic accomplishments appropriate to the individual’s academic discipline. Candidates must have a demonstrated record of administrative and managerial experience within an academic environment.
Preferred qualifications include: A vision for developing a strong arts and sciences college within the context of today’s dynamic academic environment and the ability to translate that vision into action; ability to serve as a persistent champion for the college within today’s higher education landscape and to advocate for its growth; demonstrated effectiveness in relating to diverse faculty, staff, students, and external constituencies; commitment to interdisciplinary and experiential learning in the context of growing inter-collegiate, community, and international partnerships; experience with extending and applying research, educational, and practice-based knowledge to helping to solve problems and foster lifelong learning within the community; an ability to work effectively in an environment of shared governance; and success in managing organizational change in ways that are responsive to diverse constituencies and maintain practices of collaboration and collegiality.
The College, the largest at UA, enrolls roughly 3,700 undergraduates and 450 graduate students in 22 schools and departments, seven centers and institutes, and four special programs. BCAS employs approximately 284 full-time faculty and 90 staff members. The College’s educational programs span four divisions – Fine Arts, Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. The departments, programs, research labs, and centers yield both applied and basic knowledge that provides the foundation for a strong liberal arts education for students seeking degrees both within BCAS and across The University of Akron campus. The College has been a campus leader in establishing interdisciplinary efforts, including the Integrated Bioscience Doctoral Program, the Biomimicry Research Initiative Center, and the EX[L] Center.
