Salary:

The salary is competitive and is negotiable depending on the strength of qualifications. This is a CSU Management Personnel Plan (MPP) position with an attractive benefits package which includes but is not limited to: a vacation accrual rate of 16 hours per month; 12+ paid holidays; excellent choice of medical, dental and vision insurance, long term disability coverage, life insurance; and retirement benefits.

Overview:

The Vice Provost directly reports and is responsible to the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, serves on the President's Cabinet and as the senior member of the Provost's Leadership Team, providing oversight and coordination for all activities and financial processes in the Office of the Provost. The incumbent serves as the Provost's designee, is responsible for administration of Academic Affairs when the Provost is unavailable, and works directly with the Provost to achieve the goals of the Academic Plan and the University's Plan for Excellence.

Position Summary:

Budget: The Vice Provost serves as the Budget Officer for Academic Affairs and is responsible to the Provost in such areas as planning, implementation, and control of the Academic Affairs budget. The Vice Provost

  • Develops, implements, and coordinates with the Provost's approval, budgetary allocations to all units within Academic Affairs.

  • Provides signatory approval for appropriate travel requests, requisitions and purchase orders within Academic Affairs, and for non-state funds for deans and directors.

  • Oversees the Academic Resources Office and supervises positions in that office.

  • Serves on various committees related to budget and university initiatives as the Provost's representative, including the University Budget Committee, the Campus Fee Committee, and the IRA Advisory Board.

Accreditation: The Vice Provost serves as the University's Accreditation Liaison Officer (ALO) and is responsible for WSCUC accreditation and assessment. The Vice Provost coordinates and ensures that all units undergoing accreditation are on track and prepared for a successful re-accreditation process. The Vice Provost supervises the newly created Accreditation Review Center. The Vice Provost oversees the University Director of Assessment and works closely with college and department assessment coordinators to ensure high quality student learning outcomes are achieved and a systematic culture of assessment is sustained.

Academic Technology: The Vice Provost serves as Senior Academic Technology Officer (SATO), and supervises the DISCOVERe program. The Vice Provost serves on the Technology Steering Committee to coordinate all technology related matters for Academic Affairs and advises the Provost for decisions on technology.

Engagement: The Vice Provost supervises all initiatives related to university engagement including the Richter Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning and the Office of Community and Economic Development (OCED), Academic Affairs grants (e.g. Title V), and University Lecture Series. The Vice Provost will be the Academic Affairs Liaison for the Tenure-Track Faculty Organization (TFO).

Faculty and Staff Development: The Vice Provost is responsible for the development, implementation and sustainability of Academic Affairs faculty and staff development programs. Professional development includes technology and pedagogical training, leadership development, and work-life balance.

Academic Affairs Grants: The Vice Provost is expected to aggressively identify, submit and oversee grants related to Academic Affairs (e.g., Title V, APLU) and student success, and work closely with the Director of University Initiatives. The Vice Provost provides leadership on the Grant and Research Advisory Board (GRAB).

Committees: The Vice Provost serves on the President's Cabinet, Provost's Leadership Team, Dean's Council, Academic Associate Vice President's Council, President's Tablet Task Force, President's Internationalization Committee, Technology Steering Committee (TSC), Fresno State Association Board, Campus Fee Committee, Graduate Research Advisory Board (GRAB), Student Success Executive Leadership Team, WSCUC Executive and WSCUC Steering Committees, and other committees related to budget, accreditation and assessment, technology, student success and graduation, diversity, research, and work-life balance. The Vice Provost will attend Senate meetings as ex-officio.

Secondary duties of the job include:

  • Assisting the Provost in any manner necessary, as assigned or needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate from an accredited institution. An outstanding record of teaching, scholarship, service and leadership commensurate with appointment as a full professor in an area of specialization offered by one of the academic programs at Fresno State.

  • A minimum of five years of progressive experience and leadership in university academic administration and budget management, equivalent to associate dean, dean, associate vice president or above.

  • Extensive experience developing and managing complex university budgets.

  • Outstanding analytical and quantitative skills.

  • Extensive experience leading university accreditation, campus-wide assessment and program review.

  • Extensive knowledge of technology to support academic affairs initiatives.

  • Ability to design, implement and assess innovative programs in academic affairs.

  • Strong track record of community engagement related to service and economic development.

  • Successful experience working with an engaged university community and with programs linking diverse student experiences to the community.

  • Demonstrated commitment to faculty governance, faculty and staff development, consultative processes, and consensus building.

  • Successful experience working at a university that values diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Strong experience implementing procedures, policies and regulations at the campus and California State University system level.

  • Outstanding written, oral communication, and listening skills.

  • Consistently positive and effective experience managing staff.

Specialized Skills:

  • Expert use of Excel; expert knowledge of budgetary processes.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strategic planning experience.

  • Experience working in a unionized environment.

  • Successful track record of writing and managing large-scale grants.
