Creighton University, a private, Jesuit, Catholic university, seeks a strategic, inclusive, and innovative academic leader to serve as Provost and Chief Academic Officer. This is a tremendous opportunity for a visionary leader to join an inspiring President and a distinguished University moving into a new era of growth and prominence. Creighton is pioneering interdisciplinary approaches to scholarship, changing the landscape of health education in the Southwest, promoting excellence in teaching, research, service, and clinical care, and providing students a fully integrated experience embracing academics, student life, spirituality, social justice, and service-oriented practice in all professions.
This is an exciting time to join Creighton. Always known for educational excellence and its distinctive Jesuit, Catholic mission, the University has a bold vision for the future guided by an ambitious strategic plan, The Creighton 150 Strategic Plan: Lighting the Way. Some key milestones achieved on the path to this future include:
After 16 years ranked as No. 1 in the Midwest by U.S. News & World Report, Creighton moved into the National Universities category at an impressive ranking of No. 104. This change in national rankings is linked to the University's elevation in the recent Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education from the "Master's Colleges and Universities" category to the newly created "Doctoral/Professional Universities."
Creighton has significantly expanded its commitment to serving the underserved through the Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance, which features strategic partnerships and construction of a $100 million Creighton University health sciences campus in Phoenix. These efforts will impact health education for the region and provide much needed increases in health care professionals.
Creighton has invested heavily in improving the undergraduate experience in many ways, including: transforming its library into an information commons; supporting robust undergraduate research opportunities; establishing the University as a well-established national leader in collaborative care and interprofessional education; embracing an intentional global focus for the University community; and drawing distinguished faculty and high-caliber students.
Creighton is one of 27 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States and offers a top-ranked education in the Jesuit tradition. Creighton's nine schools and colleges deliver powerful educational programs that connect arts and sciences, law, and business with the health sciences, including dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, occupational therapy and physical therapy, public health, emergency medical services, and physician assistant programs.
Creighton enrolls nearly 9,000 students, about half of which are undergraduates and the other half graduate and professional students. More than half of the undergraduate students enter Creighton planning to pursue further education in one of the professional schools, and nearly 31% of undergraduates go on to professional or graduate school. Creighton's students, faculty, and staff thrive in a supportive community committed to Jesuit, Catholic values and traditions. Creighton's Athletic Department competes at the NCAA Division I level and is a member of the BIG EAST Conference. The University employs 2,200 faculty and staff committed to academic excellence. As a mission-driven institution, the University requires talented, principled, and service-minded leaders who embrace the unique character and goals of higher education.
Creighton seeks a collaborative, forward-thinking Provost who possesses a solid understanding of the current higher education landscape, an enterprising mindset, and a track record of successfully implementing change in response to economic, political, and social forces. The Provost will oversee the budgeting and financing of academic operations, which accounts for 80% of the University's revenue and expenditures, while prioritizing student success, academic excellence, and diversity and inclusion. The Provost will work closely with the President, Board of Trustees, deans, and other senior leaders, faculty, students, staff, and governing councils to help the University achieve further distinction by addressing the following key opportunities and challenges detailed further in this profile:
Inspire, unite, and energize the academic organization around the Jesuit, Catholic tradition, Creighton's mission, and a shared vision.
Encourage innovation and creativity while ensuring effective allocation of resources among competing needs of the institution.
Focus on student success at the University and beyond.
Strengthen Creighton as a model for interprofessional education in health care in Omaha, Phoenix, and other locations.
Continue to shepherd and strengthen Creighton's health care partnerships in the Omaha and Phoenix areas and beyond, including administrative overview of mission, interprofessional pedagogy, accreditation, simulation, and clinical relationships
Support and enhance shared governance and a culture of respect and transparency.
