Dr. Analena Bruce, Assistant Professor in the Department of Agriculture, Nutrition, and Food Systems is recruiting a postdoctoral research associate to lead field research focused on food system development in New England. The proposed research will investigate the social and policy dimensions of different pathways for increasing farm income and food production in the region. The position will be in the Department of Agriculture, Nutrition, and Food Systems in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of New Hampshire, in Durham, NH.

  • Responsibilities:

  • Lead field research and coordinate the various components of a larger project that includes farm-level data collection as well as data collection on local and regional food markets, food aggregation and distribution models, local and state level agriculture and food policy, and initiatives that support regional food system development.
  • Take a leadership role in all phases of the project, including designing and conducting the research, leading the writing of grants, journal articles and conference presentations as well as advising graduate students.
  • Opportunities to collaborate with other researchers from across the agricultural and nutrition sciences on this and other projects, as well as extension educators, UNH Sustainability Institute partners, and with farmers and stakeholders from across the food system. They will also have the option of analyzing previously collected qualitative and quantitative data to facilitate publication opportunities in the first year of the project during the data collection phase.

Acceptable Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in a relevant social science discipline or related interdisciplinary program
  • excellent communication skills,
  • cultural sensitivity/ability to work effectively with diverse farm and food system actors, quantitative and/or qualitative research skills,
  • a record of research productivity.
  • The position requires travel around New England, a valid driver’s license, and successful completion of both a criminal background and driving record check.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with spatial analysis methods,
  • Research experience with human subjects,
  • Grant-writing experience,
  • Interdisciplinary research experience.
  • Some experience with agroecological or social ecological systems approaches is an asset.
