Lee Business School (LEE) is the leader in the University's deep engagement with its urban host city, building on the campus' decades-long commitment to providing access to educational excellence for its students, many of whom are children of immigrants or the first in their families to attend college. LEE also serves as an important link between the University and its communities, both in the region and globally.

The Lee Business School currently prepares more than 3,500 undergraduates and 500 graduate students to compete in today's global business environment. LEE offers bachelor's degrees with majors in accounting, economics, finance, real estate, international business, management, marketing, entrepreneurship, and management information systems. Master's degrees are offered in accounting, economics, data analytics and applied economics, quantitative finance and management information systems.  The Lee Business School also offers an MBA in part-time, executive and dual-degree formats.

LEE has 85 faculty members and 30 staff members and is organized into five departments and three highly visible centers; Lied Institute for Real Estate Studies, Center for Business and Economic Research, and the Troesh Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Through local, regional, and national partnerships, LEE seeks to leverage the unique characteristics of Las Vegas and its vibrant business community-including gaming, hospitality and conventions; finance; technology; and real estate development companies-to find solutions to business challenges that improve management practice and enhance the social welfare and economic development of its community.

UNLV is located in the vibrant and growing city of Las Vegas, a city that boasts one of the most connected airports in the world, world-class dining and entertainment, and is a destination city for millions of visitors each year. Las Vegas residents live right next to the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, and they are within comfortable driving distances of Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, and southern Utah.

The successful candidate will demonstrate support for diversity, equity and inclusiveness as well as participate in maintaining a respectful, positive work environment.

ROLE of the Dean

The Dean serves as the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Academic Officer of the Lee Business School.  As such, s/he has oversight and ultimate responsibility for all academic, personnel, and financial activities within the Lee Business School.

The Dean of the Lee Business School will provide overall academic and administrative leadership for the School. Working collaboratively with University leadership, the Dean plays a prominent, visible leadership role within the University and in the business and civic communities served by the University. The Dean leads the development and articulation of a compelling, distinctive strategy that will dramatically increase recognition of the Lee Business School. The Dean is responsible for the development and implementation of academic programs and the Lee Business School's research enterprise and has administrative and budgetary authority for related operations.

The Dean's direct reports include: Vice Dean, Associate Dean, Assistant Dean and Director of Undergraduate Programs, Assistant Dean for External Relations, Director of Development, Business Manager, and Executive Assistant. Reporting to the Executive Vice President and Provost, the Dean leads the faculty and administrative staff of the College and works collaboratively with fellow deans in the University as a university-wide leader.

Building relationships with external stakeholders is a vitally important part of the Dean's role. Working with admissions, career services, and development, the Dean engages with business and community leaders, professional organizations, legislators, alumni, and other friends of the University. The Dean is the "face" of the Lee Business School, its chief advocate and ambassador.

What is this position expected to accomplish?

Overall, the Dean is responsible for facilitating the delivery of high-quality academic programs, promoting scholarship and/or creative activities by the faculty, engaging the southern Nevada community and broader region as appropriate, and working to secure the resources needed to accomplish these goals.  Specifically, the Dean is responsible for the hiring and supervision of the faculty and staff, oversight of budgets within the School, organizing and overseeing the delivery of high-quality academic courses and programs, engaging with alumni and the general public as appropriate for community enrichment, and for seeking philanthropic support for the mission of the School.

Opportunities and Challenges

UNLV seeks a strategic, entrepreneurial and energetic leader to be the next Dean of the Lee Business School.  The Dean will build upon the strong academic foundation of the School and its increasingly deep connections with the business world and the Las Vegas community in which it cooperates. The Dean will address several challenges and opportunities that will largely determine the School's success in reaching a higher level of recognition among the world's top schools of business.  Some of these challenges will be measurable in specific quantitative outcomes and others will be seen and felt by members of the LEE community as it becomes an ever more exciting place for faculty, students, staff, alumni, and partners in business and the community to be engaged.  The institution seeks a strong Dean who will build upon recent momentum and successes and raise the School's real and perceived excellence by addressing the following challenges and opportunities:

Develop and articulate a compelling vision and strategy that build on the strengths of the Lee Business School and seize opportunities to advance the School to its next level of achievement and reputation

The Dean will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to shape and execute a strategy that articulates a clear vision for the future success and competitive positioning of the Lee Business School. This strategy will align the School as a critical component within a diverse, metropolitan region and leverage its integration within a top research institution. Under the Dean's leadership, the School will continue to strengthen its brand around high-quality research and programs focused on the unique aspects of the Las Vegas region. The Dean will be convincing and inspirational, galvanizing the faculty, staff, and other stakeholders around the Lee Business School's vision.

Actively engage with the Las Vegas business community and other external partners

The Lee Business School and the Las Vegas business community connect closely on multiple levels, a relationship that has been enhanced and guided by previous deans at LEE. Strong connections with business leaders in the Las Vegas community will be critical to the continued success of the Lee Business School, and the Dean will play the leading role in this effort. The Dean will be a visible and energetic participant in the business community, leverage and strengthen the School's Executive Advisory Board, strengthen relationships with current partners, and enroll new ones. The Dean will listen to the needs of the business community and work to develop programs that meet those needs while making the case for the School's programs and graduates in the market. This person will be an energetic leader and promote a deep engagement with university colleagues and community leaders in strategic academic initiatives and partnerships, nurture relationships with employers that enhance recruitment, and drive the School's visibility to higher levels of recognition.

Recruit, develop, and retain the next generation of outstanding faculty and promote research

Given UNLV's recent reclassification as an R1 Institution, the Dean will encourage research and provide the necessary guidance, professional development, and motivation to all faculty. The School has enjoyed the stability and leadership of a core of senior faculty, but over the next several years, upcoming retirements will enable the Dean to oversee searches to fill several tenure track lines. The Dean will champion the vital role that a diverse faculty plays in strengthening the quality of research and teaching; retaining and hiring a diverse, talented faculty will be an important priority for the Dean and the School. In addition to hiring and retaining diverse faculty, the Dean will champion relationships across departments, centers, and ranks to foster impactful research, strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, and enable mentoring programs for faculty. This is a unique opportunity for the Dean to steer the future direction of the School and to build out the School's research profile.

Improve the quality of the student experience and their career preparation

The University is dedicated to constant improvement in student success, measured in retention, student learning and satisfaction. In the Lee Business School, this means integrating and expanding opportunities for experiential learning, linking personal and career choices to improved academic programs, and supporting the full range of student diversity. As part of this initiative, the school is also dedicated to exploring innovative pedagogical approaches that can foster inclusive teaching, such as hybrid and online teaching environments. As one of the largest schools on campus, the Lee Business School's effort and its dedication to student success will echo broadly throughout the University. It is an essential partner to all the other schools and to the central administration. The new Dean will lead these efforts.

Generate new revenue streams and steward finances for the School, particularly from private philanthropy

The Dean provides strategic management of the School's resources and will focus on generating and diversifying new revenue streams from external sources and fundraising. Engaging business leaders in the Las Vegas community, the LEE alumni base, and other relevant constituencies, the Dean will lead advancement efforts in coordination with university leadership. With a compelling vision for the School's future, a clear and well-executed strategy for realizing that vision, and the personal skills to engage donors and solicit their support, the Dean will seek to dramatically increase fundraising success and play a key role as a spokesperson for the University. The Dean will exemplify the professionalism, savvy, and dynamism envisioned for the Lee Business School and communicate its compelling story persuasively.

Enhance overall diversity across LEE

Embracing UNLV's diversity is at the heart of the University's culture. The Lee Business School actively works to support diversity and recognizes that more work must be done to achieve its high aspirations. The Dean will continue and expand the effort to build a diverse academic culture-in all its forms-by recruiting faculty, staff, and students actively; focusing on retention efforts for women and underrepresented minorities; developing a curriculum that embraces diversity and intercultural competency as essential learning outcomes; and fostering transparency, fairness, and data-driven decisions in which all faculty, students, and staff are valued and supported.
