Employment Type Full-time
Application Deadline Open until filled

The Laboratory of Dr. Vishal Singh in the College of Health and Human Development, Department of Nutritional Sciences at Penn State, is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher with interest in diet-gut microbiota interactions and its implication(s) on metabolic and digestive health. The Singh lab aims to develop microbiome-informed dietary interventions to improve gastrointestinal and metabolic health, and, additionally, identify the molecular link by which microbial fermentation-derived metabolites aggravate or alleviate chronic inflammatory disorders. See our two recent publications: 1-Gut. 2019 Oct;68(10):1801-1812. doi: 10.1136/gutjnl-2018-316250, and 2-Cell. 2018 Oct 18;175(3):679-694.e22. doi: 10.1016/j.cell.2018.09.004 for more details. This position will require competence using a wide range of in vitro (cell culture) and in vivo (animal models of IBD and liver disease) experimental techniques, including immune cell analysis by flow cytometry, protein detection and signaling, gene expression, gene knockdown, and mouse genetic models, and interrogation of clinical samples. The successful candidate must have experience in working with experimental mouse models. Knowledge of maintaining mice breeding colony and genotyping is an advantage but is not required. The successful candidate will perform the experiments by employing methods mentioned above, analyzing existing data sets, assisting with regulatory compliance, writing of follow-up grants, and dissemination of findings through publications and presentations. The Postdoctoral Researcher must be able to work independently and as an interdisciplinary team member where they will have the opportunity to interact with faculty, staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students. Additional qualifications include strong oral and written communication skills, excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, and a detail-oriented work style. Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate in an appropriate field (Biochemistry, Immunology, Physiology/Gut Microbiota, Nutrition). Additional experience and training in basic microbiology techniques and microbiota analysis is desirable but not required. Please include a cover letter (highlighting research experience and future research plans), a copy of your most recent CV (including education, work experiences, publications, and a description of previous research), and the contact information for three references. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with possibility of re-funding.
