Job Description

Hypersonic Materials Lead-22241

Position Description

Are you passionate about influencing the scientific direction of research teams?

Do you like contributing to creative solutions in a collaborative environment?

Would you love to work with a group of dedicated technical specialists on projects that are necessary to maintaining our national security?

Are you passionate about advancing the latest science and leading a team of ambitious scientists and engineers?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.

The Materials and Nanostructures Group is seeking a creative and ambitious Hypersonic Materials Lead, to focus in the area of Hypersonic Flight and Weaponry. You will lead the development, integration, modeling, and understanding of the effects of material solutions for extreme environments (e.g. hypersonic flight, combustors, space exploration, etc.). You will also focus on defining the strategy for our team, whose efforts are applied to solving the Government's challenges, through defining compositions, architectures, and approaches for material systems to achieve targeted performance characteristics.

You will be joining a hardworking team of scientists and engineers with a broad range of competence that is committed to developing advanced prototypes. Our team is passionate about changing what is possible in hypersonic flight and weaponry. We strive to foster a collaborative environment with world-class expertise that achieves game-changing impact. Our APL team values integrity and innovative ideas that will ensure our nation’s preeminence in the 21st century.

As a Hypersonic Materials Subject Matter Expert:

•Your primary responsibilities will be to lead material research, develop strategy for our team, develop and prototype new materials/structures, investigate novel thermal management approaches, and lead the characterization of materials and systems as to their chemical, mechanical, and optical properties through experimentation.

•You will be the primary interface for staff and other program offices across the laboratory seeking materials for extreme environments.

•You will coordinate detailed data analyses to verify performance and explain characterization/test results.

•You will have the opportunity to propose your own research concepts and drive our strategy for the future.

•You will document and present technical work internally and externally, publish in high quality journals, and propose application of technology to our government sponsors.

•As a principal investigator and domain expert, you will lead a team of scientists and engineers by providing technical direction and insight to meet project objectives and build advanced prototypes for government agencies and sponsors.

•You will need to be knowledgeable in this space, understand the challenges, speak the language, have connections, and be respected in the community.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the position if you...

•Possess a PhD in Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemistry, or related field.

•Have 10+ years of experience of creating novel multi-functional materials, material systems, thermal protection systems, and fabrication processes and a track record of publications and presentations in this research area.

•Have high-level experience in experimental work and scale-up of materials/processes and development of prototypes as part of developing solutions to challenging problems.

•Are willing and able to perform work in a laboratory setting and travel for testing, sponsor visits, conference attendance, and presentations.

•Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

•Have experience with thermal protection systems, refractory materials, various coating processes for materials in extreme environments (e.g. plasma spray coatings, CVD coatings, etc.), optical properties of materials, aperture development, metallurgical thermodynamics, oxidation kinetics, and unique structures providing advanced performance potential in extreme environments.

•Have experience with various test environments (e.g. wind tunnels, high speed particle impact tests, flight tests, etc.) and their ability to provide unique insights into materials and system performance.
