Criminal Background Check Pre-employment criminal background checks are required for all Staff and Faculty positions. Pre-employment urinalyses drug screens are also required for all top candidates considered for positions in ACC's College Police department.

Austin Community College (ACC) is a public two-year institution that serves a diverse population of approximately 41,000 credit students each fall and spring semester. Austin Community College District (ACC) is a Hispanic-Serving Institution. ACC currently enrolls 41,500 students, over half of whom are non-white. In fall 2018, ACC's students were 44% White, 36% Latinx, 8% African-American, 5% Asian, <1% Pacific Islander, <1% Native-American, and 4% multiracial. General Statement of Job


The Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA) provides leadership for a well-established and nationally-recognized division of student affairs at an institution that is fully committed to equity in student success.  The VPSA oversees a complex organizational structure and encourages staff collaboration, on-going professional development, transparent internal/external communications, creative problem solving, and strategic thinking across the district. 
Student Affairs consists of the following departments overseen by Associate Vice Presidents: Enrollment Management (Admissions and Records, Financial Aid, Veterans Affairs, Student Recruitment and a Student Help Desk); Student Support Services (Advising, Counseling, Success Coaching, Testing/Assessment, and Career/Transfer Services); Student Engagement (Student Life, Learning Support Services, and the ACCelerator Network); and Student Advocacy (Accessibility and Social Support Services).  ACC currently has three ACCelerators (with a fourth under construction) providing large, open learning labs/environments for instruction, tutoring, and academic coaching.
As a member of the President's Cabinet, the VPSA participates in the development and assessment of the College's strategic plan initiatives to improve student access and equity, persistence and engagement, completion of academic goals, and transition thereafter to a university for further study or to employment.  The VPSA collaborates with other college administrators and departments as well as representatives from area school districts, universities, business/industry, community organizations, and governmental agencies. The VPSA ensures compliance with the principles of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and the rules of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.


Description of Duties and Tasks

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


  1. Provides leadership and oversight of staff.  Coaches, directs, mentors, evaluates, and counsels Student Affairs personnel while adhering to College human resource policies and procedures as well as related employment laws.  Recommends hire and termination actions for positions managed.
  2. Provides leadership to 30+ student support units, ensuring student-focused, proactive services that promote students' equitable access and success.
  3. Leads in designing and implementing a comprehensive advising and management system that ensures students a strong start and consistent feedback through each step of their college experience.  
  4. Provides oversight and coordination for development and implementation of short-term and long-range enrollment management plans.
  5. Leads in assessment and application of effective and efficient technology solutions in student services (i.e., automatic degree awards, e-advising, e-portfolios, etc.).      
  6. Ensures effective student services for special populations, including students who have aged out of foster care. 
  7. Provides leadership in collaboration between student affairs and academic affairs.
  8. Promotes teamwork, consistency, equity, and quality in student affairs across the district.
  9. Serves as a member of the President's Cabinet and collaborates with all college divisions to develop, implement, and assess the college's strategic plan.
  10. Assesses student affairs facility needs, hours of operation, and personnel allocation for existing and new campuses.
  11. Develops, manages, and monitors a multi-million dollar budget for student affairs.
  12. Works collaboratively with institutional research and information technology to develop and apply appropriate data measures in decision-making and reporting.
  13. Collaborates with other college offices to develop and support positive relationships and partnerships with school districts, universities, community/governmental organizations, and business/industry.
  14. Co-chairs (with the Vice President for Instruction) a shared governance council for Academic and Student Affairs.
  15. Ensures appropriate safety training is completed and in compliance with all health and safety rules and processes.
  16. Assures compliance with all local, state, and federal laws as well as principles and policies of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC) and Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

  •  Understanding of the community college philosophy and mission.       
  •  Handling the demands and requirements of senior-level management in higher education.   
  •  Effective management and leadership models and techniques, including Servant-Leadership Principles.

Required Work Experience


    • Five years related work experience including management in a higher education academic environment.


Required Education


    • Master's degree. Experience cannot be substituted for required, applicable educational level.  Doctorate preferred.


Physical Requirements


  •  Work is performed in a standard office or similar environment.
  •  Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling.
  •  Occasional lifting of objects up to 10 pounds.

ACC Benefits Overview

Full-time Faculty and Staffing Table employees who work in full-time and/or part-time positions at the College are eligible for ACC medical benefits effective the first of the month after their first 60 days of employment. Benefits include medical, dental, life insurance, short and long term disability, retirement plans and AD&D.

ACC does not participate in Social Security. ACC participates in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) and the Optional Retirement Program (ORP-Faculty Only). Part-time and Hourly employees participate in the ACC Money Purchase Plan (ACCMPP) as a retirement program required by Federal law.
