Required Qualifications:

  • PhD, MD, or similar degree in Human Factors, Psychology or a related discipline

  • Background and training should include research experience in a combination of the following domains –

o Healthcare
o Human Factors
o Quality Initiatives

  • Substantial research and publication history


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Academic experience

  • Operating Room experience

  • Experience in analyzing large datasets

The University of Minnesota’s (UMN) Department of Anesthesiology is seeking a researcher with documented expertise and interests in Human Factors and quality initiatives. The successful candidate is expected to collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams regarding quality, research, and education.

Responsibilities:

Quality

  • Redesign systems to improve patient safety and team performance.

  • Reduce inefficiencies and non-value adding tasks

  • Reduce burnout and improve clinicians' job satisfaction

  • Work with faculty to set quality goals annually, report quarterly on progress to those goals; prepare final report annually for the Chair (Wall) and Vice Chair (Wahr)

  • Coordinate faculty projects for the Quality Consortium and provide support

  • Revamping and maintaining a number of QI practices at UMN (briefs, de-briefs, timeouts, checklists, hemoglobin triggers, etc.)

  • Participating in the design and evaluation of concerns and safety information


Education

  • Assist in development and implementation of a Quality Education program for residents and incoming faculty

  • Assist residents with their quality improvement projects (design A3 set metrics, collect data, analyze, guide PDSA cycles)

  • Infuse human factors thinking/principles in medical education via health simulation in SimPORTAL

  • Evaluate bringing doctoral program to the department with the potential to offer our residents, fellows and junior staff opportunities for formal training in human factors engineering alongside their clinical training


Research

  • Supporting a range of consulting activities that involve human factors in errors and their prevention, including limitations of human perceptual, cognitive, and response capabilities

  • Assist in designing studies where clinical or operational implementation will be one of the deliverables

  • High level oversight with ongoing clinical and translational research to make sure investigators are considering how their "final product" can be implemented and maintained in the clinical care system at UMN

  • Providing case management, data processing, and other project support

  • Conducting research to obtain and review technical data, scientific literature, and standards
