The Energy Institute at CSU has a reputation for its research on upstream and midstream natural gas operations. Research efforts are expanding to include distribution systems, and we seek to employ a new Research Scientist/Scholar to lead research efforts related to underground natural gas leaks and detection methods. This position will interface with customers and other research groups using our in-house test facility. As needed, the position will lead field measurement campaigns. In addition, this position may be asked to develop professional or student learning activities in emissions research and may have the opportunity to teach courses and supervise senior design or graduate students.

Required Job Qualifications:

  • PhD in Engineering with strong experience in emissions measurement, emissions analysis methods and modeling.

  • A broad background in mechanical or chemical engineering or atmospheric sciences.

  • Demonstrated experience performing experimental work in field conditions, such as field campaigns or emissions measurements campaigns.

  • Demonstrated experience configuring practical laboratory equipment and using it in experimental methods.

  • Prior experience using statistical emissions modeling to understand emissions for analysis of experimental data or regional/national models.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience operating trace gas analyzers and gas chromatographs, or similar analytical equipment.

  • Prior experience with the natural gas industry, and sector.

  • Prior experience with underground leak phenomena, such as gas migration, modeling of underground gas movement, or similar.

  • High level of computer mastery in scientific programming using MatLab, Python and/or GIS.

  • Demonstrated experience with mechanical and electrical fabrication particularly related to laboratory equipment.

  • Prior experience working in a multi-university collaborative environment.
