Summary of Job Duties

The Beyzavi Group in the Department of Chemistry/Biochemistry in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas is accepting applications for a highly motivated and hard-working Postdoctoral Fellow in Transition-Metal Based Catalytic Systems with the focus on Late-Stage Carbon-Fluorine Bond Formation (Fluorination).

Many of the most useful synthetic molecules, including numerous pharmaceuticals, contain fluorine due to the desirable unique properties of fluorinated molecules. Carbon-Fluorine bond formation is a challenging chemical transformation, especially in the context of general, functional group-tolerant late-stage fluorination of arenes.

A long-term goal of our research is the development of new methods for the synthesis of [18F]-fluorinated small-molecule tracers for positron emission tomography (PET), a powerful imaging technique to study biological processes in vivo. The conceptual advance of our approach is the implementation of new organometallic, organic, and inorganic chemical reactivity as solutions to challenges of interest to the biomedical community.

This project is interdisciplinary as we are interested to incorporate our future metal complexes in porous nanomaterials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) to address the current challenges in [18F]-fluoride chemistry.

We aim to prepare epitaxially grown MOFs and COFs thin films as enzyme mimetics in tandem late stage 18F-fluorination reactions benefiting from MOF/COF nanoreactor environment. MOFs/COFs will enable to precisely incorporate two functional metal complexes as linkers next to each within their porous nanochannels. This will enable a tandem reaction to happen and significantly shortens the reaction times.

This will allow the synthesis of challenging PET tracers and peptides which chemists so far have not been able to synthesize. We focus on the discovery of sensors that can capture [18F]-fluoride from cyclotron under aqueous conditions and deliver it to PET tracers which will open new routes in radio-fluorination chemistry.

The project will involve collaborative work and the candidate is expected to learn new multidisciplinary techniques.

This position involves organic synthesis of ligands, preparation and characterizing of transition-metal based complexes, testing their properties, catalytic activities and reporting results to the Professor Beyzavi. The position requires mentoring of junior researchers, manuscript and patent preparation and submission of proposals for further work.

This initial appointment will be for one year, with expectation for renewal.

  • Ph.D. in chemistry or a related degree conferred by the start of employment

  • Training and hands-on experience in organic and organometallic synthesis, glovebox techniques, HPLC, GC, NMR, and mass spectroscopy

Work Location/Building

Fayetteville Campus - Chemistry Building, Chemistry and Biochemistry Research Building, and Discovery Hall. As a part of collaboration, the post-doctoral fellow may be sent to Harvard University, or another university/institute for several months.
