Job Description

Modeling and Analysis Engineer-20645

Position Description

Are you interested in applying physics and engineering skills to solve real-world problems in space applications?

Do you enjoy learning new concepts and working with others on innovative software projects?

If so, we are looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.

We are seeking an analyst or a scientific software developer to help us create physics-based simulations of space-based missions and instruments.  You’ll be joining a hard-working team of engineers and scientists who are designing and implementing modeling software to solve some of our nation’s most pressing and difficult needs in space. We strive to foster a collaborative environment where the best idea wins. As a member of our team, you will develop analysis tools and algorithms for characterizing the performance of remote sensing instruments that use optical, infrared, and radar wavelengths.  We are looking for experience in the following areas: algorithm design and optimization experience; spacecraft dynamics and/or sensor modeling; machine learning and image processing.

As a scientific software developer, your primary responsibility will be the design, authoring, and implementation of physics-based modeling codes in Matlab, Java, and Python. Also, you will

  • work with a team of developers, analysts, and scientists to meet sponsor objectives
  • help design the overall simulation environment
  • create specific elements within the simulation
  • use a professional, team-based development process

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you:

  • have a Master’s Degree in physics, engineering, or math, or a bachelor’s in one of these areas with 4+ years of experience.
  • have experience developing software in Matlab, Java, or Python
  • are willing and able to learn new programming languages.
  • have experience with space-based systems or optical or remote sensing instruments.
  • hold an active Top Secret security clearance with SCI, or the ability to get SCI. If selected you will be subject to government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You will go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you:

  • have a PhD in physics, engineering, or math
  • have developed physics-based simulations in any programming language
  • have written software in a team environment or for use by someone other than yourself
  • have 10+ years of experience with scientific software systems, data management, or data analysis
