The pharmaceutical materials scientist will join Merck’s Preformulation Group and support drug product formulation development utilizing state of the art physical characterization tools and techniques to understand the complex interplay of formulation composition and process on product performance. The candidate will work on cross-functional teams and be responsible for conducting physical measurements on a variety of dosage forms and modalities including small molecules and peptides formulated for oral delivery, injection, inhalation or other novel delivery routes. Ideal candidates should have a broad knowledge of materials characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, vibrational spectroscopy (FTIR and Raman), electron microscopy and mechanical testing. Expertise in chemical imaging techniques, vibrational spectroscopy, or materials selection and characterization of drug delivery devices is strongly preferred.
- A Master’s Degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or related discipline, with a minimum of four (4) years experience, OR a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or related discipline.
- Experience with materials characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, electron microscopy, IR and Raman spectroscopy, mechanical testing.
- Strong academic record including publications in peer reviewed journals and presentations at scientific meetings.
- Self-motivated, creative and energetic scientist willing to continually learn and solve complex problems.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
