Positions: 1 per year

Location: University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical Center, Dept. of Neurology

State Date: Rolling

Yearly Stipend:  Per NIH Guidelines

Length: 2 years. The initial appointment will be for one year with renewal on a year-to-year basis for two years. Renewal of appointment is contingent on performance and availability of funds. Criteria for selection include a strong work ethic; scientific integrity and a solid track record (as determined by publication record, progress on grant applications).

Position Description:  Cardiovascular pharmacoepidemiology, implementation science, personalized medicine, pharmacogenomics, race disparities and outcomes research, antithrombotic therapy.

Degree requirements: Pharm.D; PhD; MD with residency. The fellowship is designed to prepare the trainee for a career in academia, industry or government. A third year of training is optional and highly recommended, particularly for those with a clinical background and no prior research training.

Fellowship experiences typically include independent study protocol development and implementation, development of grant-writing skills, development of laboratory-based skills (may include: molecular biology, DNA genotyping, etc.) and clinical research skills (particularly related to antiplatelet, anticoagulation and cardiovascular research, genetic and genomic data analysis, potentially pharmacokinetic / pharmacodynamic data analysis, statistical analysis, abstract preparation and presentation of research at national meetings, and manuscript preparation and publication.

Fellows will also participate in research seminars and journal clubs, and may have minimal didactic, clerkship and small group teaching responsibilities (<5% effort). Fellows are encouraged to pursue graduate level coursework.
